Lucy Dacus on Love, Privacy, and Advocacy
Relationship Insights
In a recent interview, singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus expressed her feelings about her relationship with bandmate Julian Baker, referring to it as a “blessing.” They have been candid about their connection, though Dacus remains cautious regarding public scrutiny.
When asked about the rising interest in their relationship online, she admitted, “I try not to look.” This reflects a desire to maintain privacy amidst the escalating fan commentary, which often manifests in social media memes. Dacus acknowledged that while she is aware of the reactions, she prefers to keep a distance from it to safeguard her personal life.
The Impact of Public Persona on Music
Dacus recognizes the complexities that come when fans connect personal narratives with musical content. Sharing that her latest album is deeply emotional, she noted, “In a way, that’s a bit that makes me feel uncomfortable.” This discomfort stems from the tendency for fans to analyze her life as if it were part of a larger narrative universe, complicating the boundary between artistry and personal experience.
“All lore—those who treat our lives like Marvel’s universe,” she continued. The challenge becomes how much of her story she chooses to share with the public, a decision complicated by her longing for both authenticity and privacy.
Securing Personal Boundaries
To bolster her mental well-being, Dacus has taken steps to avoid negative commentary online. She reflected on this decision in an interview with The New Yorker, stating that such adjustments, while minor, contribute significantly to her sense of safety, particularly in an age when public insight often veers into invasive territory.
Advocacy for Trans Rights
In addition to her musical endeavors, Dacus is also a vocal advocate for social issues, particularly regarding the rights of transgender individuals. Earlier this year, she pledged $10,000 to a GoFundMe campaign supporting trans surgeries, emphasizing that “the government will never be a source of verification or protection for us.” This commitment showcases her dedication to not only art but also important causes affecting her community.
“I’m very blessed,” Dacus stated, referring to her close circle, which primarily includes trans individuals. However, she also highlighted the struggles many face, noting that some have had their identities challenged or invalidated in various ways, further motivating her to raise awareness.
