A Bold Commitment to Quit Smoking
Charley Hull, the professional golfer who gained viral attention for smoking on the golf course, has made a bold commitment to give up cigarettes for good. The 28-year-old, who has been open about her smoking habit, recently posted a video on Instagram revealing her decision to quit smoking—and it comes with high stakes.
The $10K Bet
In the video, Hull is seen talking to her friend and fellow professional golfer, Ryan Evans, about the bet she made. “Today, I’ve made the decision I’m going to stop smoking,” Hull shared. She then proposed a challenge: “I’m going to give them to Ryan now. I’m going to do a 10-grand bet with you. I get no money in it. Ten-grand bet. If I pick up a cigarette in the next two months, I’ll give you 10 grand and I’m shaking on that. Deal?”
Evans, amused by the wager, responded, “I’m going to have to record you 24 hours a day.” The two shook hands, setting the terms of the bet, which Hull seemed confident she would win. She even joked that Evans was welcome to dispose of her cigarettes. However, she made it clear she wasn’t turning to vaping as an alternative, further clarifying her commitment through an Instagram Story. Instead, Hull said she would be using “snus,” a smokeless tobacco product that is popular in the UK.
Viral Moment Brings Public Attention
Hull’s decision to quit smoking comes after a series of viral moments. In May 2024, during the U.S. Women’s Open, she was photographed on the golf course with a cigarette in hand. The image quickly caught the public’s attention, and Hull commented on the incident months later, saying, “It was crazy. Not really what I was expecting, but I guess it shows that any publicity is good publicity.” While she admitted she would prefer to be in the headlines for her golf skills, Hull acknowledged that the attention helped introduce more fans to the sport.
Shifting Focus to Health and Fitness
Despite the fame that came from her smoking habit, Hull has expressed her desire to take a healthier path moving forward. In February 2025, before the PIF Saudi Ladies International, she mentioned her goal to improve her 5K run time, with the target of reaching 20 minutes. “I don’t train for golf,” Hull explained. “I have zero interest in training for golf. I don’t want to be just a golfer. I want to be an athlete.” This shift in focus signals her commitment to both her physical health and her mental well-being, as she continues to push for greater athleticism outside of the golf course.
A Fresh Start: Fans Root for Hull
Hull’s decision to make a $10,000 bet reflects her dedication to making meaningful changes in her life. As she works toward a healthier future, her fans will undoubtedly be rooting for her to stay on track and kick the smoking habit for good.
