Billy McFarland, the controversial organizer behind the infamous Fyre Festival, is announcing plans for “Fire Festival 2.” Despite facing significant skepticism from local authorities, McFarland insists that he has coordinated effectively with the municipality of Playa del Carmen, Mexico, to facilitate this event.
Earlier this week, officials from Playa del Carmen publicly stated that “such an event of that name will not take place in our city.” This dismissal highlights the mounting challenges McFarland faces due to the town’s apprehension about hosting the festival.
In response to the government’s assertions, the Fire Festival 2 team released a detailed social media update. They claim to have established communication with local authorities since early March an effort which they assert is aimed at securing the necessary approvals.

McFarland also shared several screenshots of purported documents submitted to city officials, including communications that appear to indicate pre-authorization for the festival and interest from local representatives. This might suggest a more collaborative effort than previously assumed.

This is not the first time a city has distanced itself from McFarland’s festival plans. Initially, the Fire Festival was proposed to take place on the island of Isla Mujeres, near Cancun, but local officials there quickly denied any involvement, mirroring Playa del Carmen’s current stance.

In a previous conversation held in February, McFarland asserted his commitment to creating a seamless experience for attendees, referencing the previous festival’s failures. As of now, attempts to reach out to officials from both Billy McFarland’s team and Playa del Carmen have gone unanswered.
