Lady Gaga has been a symbol of resilience in the music industry, but even the most iconic artists face moments of doubt. Recently, she opened up about a time when she almost gave up her music career, revealing the personal challenges that nearly led her to walk away from her passion.
As she prepares for the release of her seventh album Mayhem in March, Lady Gaga took a moment to reflect on her early career struggles during an appearance on Hot Ones with Sean Evans on February 13. The pop star revealed how the isolation from her family and community in New York almost became too much to bear.
“I missed the community that I had in New York, and that was really hard,” Lady Gaga shared. “There were definitely times where I felt like maybe I should walk away, but I know for sure that I never would.”
Despite the feelings of loneliness and homesickness, she acknowledged that her love for music would always pull her back. “I’m still doing it, so it must mean I want to do it,” she explained, reinforcing the deep connection she has with her craft.
Lady Gaga’s career has always been marked by bold performances and larger-than-life stage designs. However, she revealed that a key turning point in her artistry came after a performance at the 2010 BRIT Awards. During that event, she performed in front of an enormous 3D sculpture created by artist Nick Knight. While it was meant to be a striking visual, the performance was marred by logistical issues, and the crew had trouble getting the massive sculpture on and off the stage.
“It was so early in my career, we just didn’t plan how it would get on and off the stage,” Gaga recalled. “The crew guys were like, ‘This statue is about as big as this arena, we cannot put this on stage.’ That was pretty expensive and a bad decision.” This experience taught her the importance of being more mindful and resourceful in her stage productions, which led to a shift in her approach to performances.
In recent years, Lady Gaga has scaled back on the extravagant set designs, opting for a more minimalist approach, as seen in her recent performances, including her surprise rendition of “Hold My Hand” at the 2025 Super Bowl. These simpler shows reflect her desire to focus more on the music and the emotional connection with her audience, rather than relying on overly elaborate visuals.
Her personal life, particularly her relationship with fiancé Michael Polansky, has also played a key role in her growth as an artist. Polansky, who has been a producer on her upcoming album, has had a significant influence on her creative journey. Gaga has described him as “brilliant” and admires his versatility in various fields, from business to science and philanthropy. “He never ceases to amaze me,” she shared, emphasizing how his support and creativity inspire her.
Their relationship has been a source of stability for Lady Gaga, and their engagement in 2024 further solidified their bond. Despite their private nature, they’ve been open about their love and support for each other, particularly during difficult times, such as the traumatic incident involving Gaga’s dogs in 2021.
As Lady Gaga prepares for the next chapter in her career with Mayhem, her journey has been one of personal and professional growth. From nearly quitting to embracing a new, more grounded approach to her artistry, she continues to prove that despite the struggles, her passion for music and her unwavering determination keep her moving forward.
Through the ups and downs, Lady Gaga remains committed to her craft, showing that walking away was never truly an option
