Matty Bovan’s New Collection: A Cinematic Journey into Fashion
Dark Inspirations
Matty Bovan recently remarked, “There’s always a dark line running through my work.” This season, he delves deep into the influences of film noir, particularly the enigmatic female characters characteristic of director David Lynch.
A Fusion of Styles
Bovan’s latest collection features a remarkable blend of deadstock textiles to create a fantastical array of wearables. A significant inspiration comes from the iconic Audrey Horne, portrayed in Lynch’s cult classic “Twin Peaks,” enhancing the collection’s narrative depth.
Moreover, the collection pays homage to a prominent actor whose unique aesthetic emphasizes bold shoulder pads and oversized earrings, reflecting an era of distinctive style choices.
Layered Design Elements
Echoing the complex personalities seen in Lynch’s films, the collection showcases multifaceted designs. The garments incorporate loosely knit eyelash threads that mimic colorful coral reefs, layered over a base of sharply defined taffeta and tulle.
Bovan employs deadstock materials from the Cheshire-based manufacturer Friedmans Ltd and sculpts them into abstract geometric patterns and floral shapes, carefully layering these elements to create a captivating montage.
A Touch of Disorder
Staying true to his artistic vision, Bovan embraces a “slightly destroyed” aesthetic, resulting in pieces that appear as if they have endured a struggle—like remnants of a dramatic scene by a still body of water. This evocative style is enhanced by tattered hems and layered textures.
Additional design features include lurex-toned lizard patterns alongside Versace-like foulard prints, interspersed with bold accents from lipstick-red tulle. These elements contribute to Bovan’s distinctive silhouettes that challenge conventional fashion norms.
Imaginary Characters Come Alive
The collection’s lookbook presents a captivating array of fictional characters that embody a blend of charm and intrigue. To deepen the narrative, a series of collection films is now available on YouTube, showcasing the collection’s dynamic and atmospheric qualities.
Set against the backdrop of York’s wet sandstone streets, these films illustrate Bovan’s vision of an intuitively designed city space, blending influences from both “Twin Peaks” and the American West.
