Princess Diana’s Night Out: An Adventure at a London Gay Bar
New insights into Princess Diana’s life reveal an unexpected escapade during her time as a royal. In an upcoming biography titled Dianaworld: An Obsession, author Edward White recounts a legendary evening when Diana ventured into one of London’s iconic gay bars.
The Disguise
According to White, the story highlights a lesser-known aspect of Diana’s personality—her desire to connect with the LGBTQ+ community. During a night out, Diana was convinced by comedian Clerolocos to don a disguise to infiltrate the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.
With the help of radio personality Kenny Everett, Diana transformed her appearance by wearing a camouflage jacket, tucking her hair under a leather hat, and donning dark aviator sunglasses. Locos described the experience as “ridiculously outrageous and oddly exciting,” emphasizing that no one recognized the princess.
A Night of Revelry
The group, which included notable friends from the entertainment world, stayed at the tavern for about 20 minutes. After having a drink, Diana returned to Kensington Palace, sending Everett’s clothes back the next day along with a note expressing her enjoyment of the evening.
This outing not only showcases Diana’s adventurous spirit but also symbolizes her ongoing search for acceptance and genuine connections, according to White. The event has become a metaphor for her struggles amidst royal life and her desire for a sense of belonging.
Reflections from Friends
In reflections on that evening, Clerolocos mentioned a hilarious lunch they shared prior to the outing. Diana was known for her curiosity about the entertainment industry and would often inject humor into her interactions. On this particular day, after lunch, she expressed a keen interest in joining the group for their evening plans.
“We were all laughing and she said, ‘I want to come too.’ We thought she was joking,” Locos recalled, noting that the support from Freddie Mercury also encouraged the princess’s decision to join them.
A Legacy of Connection
Despite the immense pressures of royal life, Princess Diana demonstrated a unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Her visit to the gay bar exemplifies her appreciation for different communities and her quest for authentic experiences. In August 1996, Diana divorced King Charles III and tragically died a year later in a car accident, but her legacy continues to inspire many.
