“I create fragrances that tell a story,” Riccardo explains, “Whether they are memories, places I visited, geographical or historical references, a moment in space and time is usually the starting point for a fragrance formula. So, it is inevitable that the complexity of my perfumes may transport you somewhere, if not causing an immediate identification with it.”

Riccardo’s creative process is anything but conventional. One key aspect, for example, is that his fragrances are not diluted or expanded with solvents or diluents. “Blending is the essence of what I do,” he explains. “It’s not just about combining ingredients; it’s about creating something new from the raw materials, about discovering how they interact and evolve. In this work, it is tempting to rely on diluents to enlarge fragrance content, expecting a candle to diffuse more simply because it has more finished fragrance,” he explains. “In perfumery, we have a simple rule: if you don’t smell it in the final creation, you don’t need it. Some materials are very quiet, almost imperceptible, but a trained nose detects a change. We use diluents to make thick materials manageable; for example, absolutes and resinoids require dilution. Besides them, sometimes adding an adequate amount of diluent can create more space between molecules, allowing more to be perceived. But an overdose of diluent to expand on minimal use of active components feels somewhat like cheating.”
“When blending, a perfumer will work with multiple materials of natural and synthetic origin; some are the backbone, also called the skeleton or core blenders, others are the heart of the composition, and others act as modifiers in trace amounts, which take the composition into a final direction,” he explains. “All these materials, you should get credit for; otherwise, why are they there? Here’s where chemistry and science step in, where all the materials chosen sing in unison, creating something new and different from each other in their previous, raw state.”
This evolution in blending is evident in the complexity of his candle fragrances. Because candles rely on evaporation driven by the flame, they are expected to perform linearly, meaning the fragrance remains constant throughout the candle’s life. From a product development standpoint, for a compounder, it makes sense to combine molecules that diffuse at the same or similar rates and temperatures, so they all smell together at the same time. “But what happens when you apply high perfumery techniques to a blend for a candle?” Asks Riccardo. “You have to work with molecules that evaporate and diffuse at different rates. Despite my candles smelling linear like any other candle, they also display layers of accords because their components evaporate at different rates. The result is more interesting to the nose. People can detect lavender, orange blossoms, apricot, pomegranate, grapes, leather, and frankincense in my candles because I use real materials that produce those smells.”
