Potocka’s Collapse After 200m IM Race
On August 2, 2024, Potocka, 21, competed in one of the five heats for the women’s 200-meter individual medley at the Paris Olympics. After completing her race, she fell to the ground as she left the pool. An Olympics broadcast captured the moment, showing Potocka receiving immediate first aid, including an oxygen mask, before being carried out of La Défense Arena on a stretcher.
Medical Response and Diagnosis
Poolside medical personnel indicated that Potocka was conscious after the collapse. The Slovakian Olympic team later confirmed to The Athletic that she had suffered an asthma attack. Potocka received oxygen therapy on-site and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Team officials stated that Potocka would continue to be monitored by medical staff.
Acknowledging the Risks of Swimming
Fellow competitor Lea Polonsky, who represented Israel in a separate 200-meter individual medley heat, spoke to reporters about the risks athletes face. “Of course, that’s something in the back of your mind, but we do every day push ourselves to the limit,” Polonsky, 22, said. “You always know something like that can happen. It’s not something you think about during the race, but it’s always there.”
Potocka’s Olympics Debut and Performance
Ahead of the race, Potocka shared her Olympic journey with fans on social media, including her excitement for the opening ceremony and her outfits. She made her Olympics debut at the Paris Games, which officially began on July 26. Potocka’s Achievements and Future
Potocka, who specializes in the 200-meter individual medley, was a four-time finalist at the 2024 European Championships. She had hoped to make a strong showing at the Paris Games but faced a challenging race.
