Steve Jones Reflects on Life and Career in Recent Interview
Personal Insights from the Sex Pistols Guitarist
In a candid interview with The Guardian, Steve Jones, the guitarist for the iconic punk band Sex Pistols, opened up about his idiosyncratic sense of humor and some entertaining incidents from his life.
Humorous Anecdote with Lisa Marie Presley
Jones recounted a memorable moment where he inadvertently caused embarrassment in front of the late Lisa Marie Presley. “I farted once in front of Lisa Marie Presley,” he said, recalling how she reacted with “the face of disgust” while she was sitting outside Starbucks. Jones humorously noted, “I walked to Starbucks. Is that bad?”
Professional Encounters
The guitarist reminisced about another notable interaction with Sir Cliff Richard. While hosting a radio show, he invited Richard to perform. “He came down, brought his guitar, and I couldn’t silence him. He went through all the classic songs. He’s such a professional,” Jones remarked, expressing admiration for Richard’s talent.
Following their meeting, Jones received an entertaining voicemail from Richard when the Sex Pistols were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. “He left a message and he just started singing, ‘Congratulations! And jubilee!’ It was the most entertaining thing ever,” Jones shared with a smile.
Upcoming Tour Plans
This week, Jones announced that the Sex Pistols will embark on their first North American tour since 2003, featuring original members including Paul Cook and Glenn Matlock, with Frank Carter as the lead vocalist. The tour will kick off in Dallas on September 16, showcasing their seminal 1977 album Never Mind the Bollocks and will conclude in Los Angeles on October 16.
Johnny Rotten’s Response
Notably, John Lydon, known as Johnny Rotten and the original lead singer of the Sex Pistols, expressed his frustrations regarding the new lineup earlier this year. He stated, “I just thought, ‘They were going to kill absolutely everything that was good with a pistol by eliminating all the points and objectives.’ I didn’t lightly write those words down,” showcasing ongoing tensions within the band.
