David Corenswet has officially been cast as the new Superman in Superman: Legacy, a new film directed by James Gunn. Corenswet’s casting was confirmed in late June 2023, as Gunn revealed he would be starring opposite Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane. Fans were excited about the announcement, with Gunn calling the pair not only exceptional actors but also wonderful people.
The actor, who takes over the role previously portrayed by Henry Cavill, will bring a fresh interpretation to the iconic character. While Cavill’s version of Superman has become iconic, Gunn’s vision for the film will explore an earlier stage of Clark Kent’s life. The decision to recast Superman was made as Gunn and Peter Safran, co-chairs of DC Studios, felt a new direction was needed for the character’s journey.
David Corenswet’s Rise to Fame
Born in Pennsylvania in 1993, David Corenswet has been acting for over two decades. He began his career in local theater productions in Philadelphia before studying at the prestigious Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Corenswet’s breakout moments came when he starred in Ryan Murphy’s The Politician and Hollywood. His performance caught the attention of Hollywood, and soon after, he was cast in the HBO crime drama We Own This City in 2022.
His film career is also on the rise with roles in movies such as Affairs of the State and Sunlit Night. More recently, Corenswet appeared opposite Lili Reinhart in Look Both Ways on Netflix and joined Mia Goth in Pearl by A24. In 2024, he’s set to star in the Twister sequel, which will feature Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell.
David Corenswet’s Superman Audition
The actor has been vocal about his admiration for the Superman role for years. Corenswet admitted in a 2019 interview that playing the iconic hero was his “pie-in-the-sky ambition.” He expressed interest in portraying a brighter, more optimistic version of Superman, in contrast to the darker take offered by Cavill in previous films.
Replacing Henry Cavill
David Corenswet will be stepping into the red cape and blue suit after Henry Cavill’s unexpected exit. Cavill’s departure was confirmed in December 2022 after meeting with Gunn and Safran. Cavill had previously announced his return to the role following Black Adam, but the new direction for the character left the actor’s Superman era behind.
Corenswet, however, has big shoes to fill. His version of Superman will focus on a younger Clark Kent, with a fresh perspective on the superhero’s origins and development. Although he isn’t the youngest actor to play Superman (that distinction belongs to Brandon Routh in 2006), Corenswet is a decade younger than Cavill, making him a perfect fit for this rebooted era of the character.
With his impressive resume and natural charisma, Corenswet seems poised to take on the role of the world’s most iconic superhero. Fans are eager to see how his portrayal of Clark Kent will differ from Cavill’s and what new elements Corenswet will bring to the beloved character.
Superman: Legacy does not yet have an official release date, but with Corenswet leading the charge, anticipation continues to build for the film’s arrival.
