Snoop Dogg’s ‘Altar Call’: A Melodic Tribute to His Mother
Iconic rapper Snoop Dogg has taken a significant step into the gospel music genre with the release of ‘Altar Call,’ a 21-track project executive produced by him under the Death Row Records label.
A Heartfelt Dedication
‘Altar Call’ is dedicated to Snoop Dogg’s mother, Beverly Tate, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 70. In his words to OkePlayer, Snoop stated, “My mother’s spirit will live in me forever.” He expressed that the album embodies the lessons he learned from her about using his platform to promote love and healing.
An Innovative Fusion of Genres
The album marks a unique intersection between gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and other musical styles. Snoop’s intention was to blend these genres harmoniously. “This album reflects what she taught me: to use my voice and my platform to spread love and heal the world,” he shared.
Featuring Notable Artists
‘Altar Call’ includes contributions from renowned vocalists such as Jamie Foxx and John P. Key. Jamie Foxx delivers a tribute to Bill Withers with his rendition of “Grandma’s Hands,” while fellow Death Row artists Charlie Breal and Jane Handcock contribute with tracks like “Great and Mercy” and “Just Believe.”
A Continuing Journey in Gospel Music
This project is not Snoop Dogg’s first venture into gospel music; he previously released a biblical love album in 2018. Reflecting on his journey, he noted, “I’ve always been in gangsta business, so it never became that, I felt it had been in my heart for a long time. I need to do it now.” He aims to send a message of unity and love through this new work, especially during challenging times.
