Claire Foy’s Blue Pen Refusal Sparks Viral Moment

Claire Foy, best known for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, recently made headlines for a seemingly minor yet memorable moment during a public appearance. On December 15, 2023, Foy was seen refusing to sign a fan’s autograph with a blue pen, stating, “I don’t do blue, sorry.” The interaction, captured in a viral video, left the fan stunned, and the incident quickly became a topic of discussion among fans and onlookers.

As Foy was escorted by security through Rockefeller Center in New York City, she politely declined the blue pen request, while continuing to walk past the crowd. When the fan questioned her response, Foy repeated, “I don’t do blue,” leaving the fan groaning in disbelief. However, shortly after, Foy stopped to sign an autograph for another fan who had a black sharpie, further fueling the online conversation about her unusual preference.

Fans React to the ‘Weird’ Refusal

The refusal to sign with a blue pen sparked a variety of reactions from fans. Some were confused, with one user commenting, “That is the weirdest thing. No blue, wonder what the reason is?” Others expressed disappointment, especially those who had long admired Foy for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown. One fan wrote, “I loved her so much since the show, but was pretty disappointed in her here.”

On the other hand, many fans defended Foy’s actions, offering logical explanations behind her preference. One user suggested, “Most celebrities and athletes are taught not to do blue ink because you can scan and forge the signature on other things and sell them.” This reasoning aligns with the practices of many public figures who avoid blue ink to prevent the creation of counterfeit memorabilia.

The Blue Pen Debate: A Common Practice Among Celebrities

The notion of avoiding blue ink is not unique to Foy. Other celebrities, including athletes like Patrick Beverly, have openly discussed their reasons for steering clear of blue pens when signing autographs. Beverly, on The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone in December 2022, shared how he was advised early in his career that blue ink could be easily copied and used to forge signatures on various items, making black or gray pens a safer choice for authenticating signatures.

This practice is commonplace among high-profile figures in the entertainment industry, where memorabilia and autographs are often sold for significant amounts of money. By using black or other colors of ink, celebrities aim to protect the authenticity of their signatures and prevent fraudulent activities.

Claire Foy’s Legacy as Queen Elizabeth II

Foy, 39, became a household name for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the first two seasons of The Crown. Her exceptional performance earned her numerous accolades, including two Emmys, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Golden Globe. While her role in the Netflix series cemented her as a critical figure in television history, Foy has expressed that she does not want to be defined solely by her portrayal of the British monarch.

In a recent interview, Foy shared that while she has “a lot of love” for the series and the cast, she ended her journey with The Crown for her own peace of mind. “For my own sanity, I ended the show when I ended it,” she explained, emphasizing that she made the decision to move on and continue pursuing other roles in the industry.

Foy’s Career Beyond The Crown

Since leaving The Crown, Foy has continued to build an impressive career in both television and film. Her roles have ranged from dramas to comedies, and she is not focused on being typecast as Queen Elizabeth II. Foy’s versatility as an actress is evident in her wide range of performances, and she remains dedicated to exploring new and exciting opportunities in her career.

Despite the controversies surrounding the blue pen incident, Claire Foy’s legacy as an accomplished actress continues to shine, and her actions, whether on-screen or off, often spark thoughtful conversations among her fans and the public.
