Fashion designer Jelena Kulic transforms art, history, and storytelling into handcrafted creations celebrated across global fashion and cultural publications.

A Remarkable Debut on Fashion’s Biggest Stage

At just 23 years old, fashion designer Jelena Kulic made her Paris Fashion Week debut, becoming one of the youngest designers to present work during the season. What began as a deeply personal creative project soon evolved into an international journey that would bring her work to audiences across Europe, Asia and North America, while establishing her as a distinctive voice in contemporary independent fashion.

Kulic first introduced her work to the international fashion community through Evening at the Opera, a collection of handcrafted handbags presented during Paris Fashion Week. Inspired by the grandeur of the Palais Garnier and the rich artistic heritage of France, the collection was conceived as a tribute to one of the country’s most celebrated cultural landmarks. Rather than treating accessories as purely functional objects, Kulic approached each handbag as a miniature work of art, drawing inspiration from architecture, history and storytelling.

Crafting Fashion Through Art and Storytelling

The collection explored the atmosphere of the Paris Opera House through a series of one of a kind designs. Architectural details, ornamental elements and references to the building’s interiors were translated into handcrafted accessories through a combination of hand painting, sculptural ornamentation and meticulous artisanal techniques. Every piece was individually created, ensuring that no two bags were identical. This commitment to craftsmanship became one of the defining characteristics of the collection and a cornerstone of Kulic’s design philosophy.

For Kulic, fashion has always existed in close dialogue with art. Rather than viewing garments and accessories as products, she sees them as vehicles for storytelling and creative expression. The handcrafted ornaments featured throughout the collection were produced individually, while painted details transformed each bag into a unique artistic composition. This approach reflects a broader belief that fashion can function as a form of applied art, allowing artistic ideas to move beyond galleries and museums into everyday life.

Gaining International Recognition

The presentation attracted significant international attention. Following her Paris Fashion Week debut, Kulic’s work was featured across more than 150 publications worldwide, reaching readers throughout Europe, Asia and North America. Particularly notable was the reception in China, where her work appeared in more than 127 publications, introducing her designs to a rapidly growing international audience.

Among the publications that featured her work were internationally recognised fashion titles including Elle and L’Officiel China, alongside numerous digital and print platforms covering emerging designers and independent fashion. The extensive media coverage reflected not only interest in the collection itself but also growing appreciation for a design approach that prioritises craftsmanship, individuality and artistic expression in an increasingly fast paced fashion landscape.

Expanding Influence Beyond Fashion Media

The international recognition extended beyond traditional fashion coverage. Kulic’s work and perspective have also been featured in a variety of publications where she contributed commentary on fashion, style and contemporary culture. Through these opportunities, she expanded her presence within the industry while participating in broader conversations about creativity and self expression.

Beyond the fashion industry, Kulic has also been featured in respected university publications, including The Michigan Daily, the independent student newspaper of the University of Michigan, founded in 1890, and The Brunswickan, the official student publication of the University of New Brunswick, whose history dates back to 1867. Through these features, she shared her insights on fashion, personal style and the relationship between clothing and identity, introducing her work to readers across North American academic communities.

These appearances reflected growing interest in Kulic’s perspective as a young designer whose work extends beyond aesthetics alone. By contributing to discussions within long established educational publications, she engaged with audiences interested not only in fashion, but also in creativity, self expression and contemporary culture.

The features further expanded her international presence and demonstrated how her work resonates across different fields, attracting attention from both fashion media and publications dedicated to broader cultural conversations.

Inspiration Rooted in History, Mythology, and Art

Throughout her work, Kulic frequently draws inspiration from art history, mythology, architecture and literature. Rather than following seasonal trends, she often begins the creative process by exploring historical narratives, artistic movements and cultural symbols that can be reinterpreted through fashion. References to mythology, classical art and architectural ornamentation regularly appear throughout her designs, reflecting a fascination with storytelling and the ways in which visual culture can be translated into wearable form.

This multidisciplinary approach allows each project to develop its own narrative identity. Whether inspired by the grandeur of nineteenth century opera houses, mythological figures or historical works of art, Kulic seeks to create designs that invite viewers to engage with the stories behind them. As a result, her pieces function not only as fashion objects but also as artistic interpretations of the cultural references that inspire them.

For Kulic, fashion serves as a bridge between historical inspiration and contemporary craftsmanship, allowing cultural heritage to be experienced in a new and tangible way. This philosophy has remained consistent throughout her creative journey and continues to shape the direction of her work.

From Accessories to Couture

Following the success of her Paris Fashion Week debut, Kulic began expanding her creative practice beyond accessories and into couture and garment design, bringing the same emphasis on craftsmanship and artistic expression to her clothing.

This transition has been guided by the same principles that shaped Evening at the Opera: craftsmanship, originality and a commitment to artistic detail. Hand embroidery, hand painted elements and individually constructed embellishments have become central features of her work, allowing each design to maintain a strong connection to traditional artisanal techniques.

Many of her designs involve extensive handwork, from embroidery and embellishment to hand painted details inspired by art, history and architecture. Through these techniques, each piece becomes more than a garment. It becomes a wearable artwork that reflects the same creative philosophy that first defined her accessory collections.

Her move into couture has also allowed her to further develop the concept that has remained at the heart of her work since the beginning: the idea that fashion and art are not separate disciplines, but complementary forms of creative expression. Whether designing a handbag, creating a hand embroidered garment or developing new artistic concepts, Kulic approaches each project with the intention of transforming inspiration into something tangible and deeply personal.

A Vision Defined by Artistry and Authenticity

Rather than separating fashion from art, Kulic continues to explore ways of bringing the two disciplines together. Whether through accessories, couture garments or editorial contributions, her projects share a common objective: transforming creative ideas into tangible pieces that invite both visual appreciation and emotional connection.

What began as a tribute to French culture on the Paris Fashion Week runway has since grown into a broader creative journey spanning multiple disciplines and international audiences. Yet despite expanding recognition and global media attention, the core philosophy behind Kulic’s work remains unchanged. Each design begins with a story, each detail is created with intention and each piece is conceived not merely as fashion, but as an expression of art.

As her career continues to develop, that commitment to craftsmanship and individuality remains at the centre of her creative vision. In an industry increasingly shaped by speed and mass production, Jelena Kulic represents a new generation of designers who continue to champion the value of artistry, authenticity and the enduring power of handmade creation.
