David Johansen, the iconic frontman of the New York Dolls, has publicly revealed his ongoing battle with stage 4 cancer and a recent brain tumor diagnosis. His stepdaughter, Leah Hennessey, shared the news on Sweet Relief Musician Fund’s website, explaining that Johansen has been in treatment for nearly a decade.
The cancer diagnosis emerged nearly ten years ago, and complications arose when his condition worsened at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. “David’s cancer progressed, and we discovered a brain tumor,” Leah wrote, noting that his health has continued to decline.
For the past five years, Johansen has been unable to work, and his health challenges have put a significant financial strain on the family. The family had kept his condition private, but due to the escalating situation, they felt compelled to seek support.
Things worsened further after Johansen suffered a serious fall around Thanksgiving 2024, leading to surgery and subsequent health complications. “David has been bedridden and incapacitated, and his illness has progressed exponentially,” Leah shared. “My mother has been caring for him around the clock.”
Johansen also spoke about his pain and the toll his illness has taken on him. “This is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced,” he admitted. “I’ve never been one to ask for help, but this is an emergency. Thank you.”
Johansen’s family remains hopeful and grateful for the support they have received during this difficult time.
