Christian Dior’s renowned exhibition, Designer of Dreams, has made its debut in South Korea, marking a significant cultural event. Hosted at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul, the exhibition offers an immersive journey through Dior’s rich heritage and innovative designs. Curated by Florence Müller and designed by architect Shohei Shigematsu of OMA, the exhibition presents a fresh perspective on Dior’s legacy, blending Western fashion history with Korean cultural elements.
A Fusion of Dior’s Legacy and Korean Culture
The exhibition unfolds within DDP’s expansive, column-free Art Hall 1, utilizing the space’s architectural features to create a fluid narrative. Central to the design is ‘The Garden,’ a monumental 12-meter-tall moon jar, symbolizing harmony and simplicity. Inside this sculptural centerpiece, visitors encounter a hanji paper forest and a dynamic projection dome, crafted by Korean artist Hyun Joo Kim, offering a serene and immersive experience.
Each thematic room within the exhibition reinterprets Dior’s iconic elements through a Korean lens. The ‘Dior Legacy’ room showcases a ribbon-like structure inspired by jogakbo patchwork, tracing the evolution of the House’s creative directors. The ‘Lady Dior’ room draws from traditional red lacquerware cabinetry, transforming modular units into sculptural displays of the iconic bag. Other highlights include the ’30 Avenue Montaigne,’ ‘The New Look,’ ‘Miss Dior,’ and ‘Colorama’ rooms, each offering unique insights into Dior’s design philosophy and history.
Celebrating Over 75 Years of Haute Couture
Spanning over 75 years of creative excellence, the exhibition features more than 300 haute couture pieces, archival documents, and visuals that chronicle Dior’s journey from its inception to the present day. Visitors are invited to explore the origins of haute couture at 30 Avenue Montaigne, Dior’s ‘kingdom of dreams,’ and witness the transformation brought about by the iconic ‘New Look’ of 1947. The exhibition delves into themes cherished by Dior, including his love for flowers and gardens, the artistry behind the ateliers, and his passion for balls and exceptional parties.
Collaborations with Korean Artists
In a unique collaboration, the exhibition features reinterpretations of the Lady Dior bag by prominent Korean artists through two flagship projects: Dior Lady Art and Lady Dior As Seen By. These reinterpretations, nine from the Dior Lady Art project and seventeen from the Lady Dior As Seen By concept, enrich the exploration of the powerful ties forged between Dior and Korea.
