Loni Anderson, the beloved actress renowned for her role as Jennifer Marlowe on the classic sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, has passed away at the age of 79. Anderson died on August 3, 2025, just two days before her 80th birthday, after a prolonged illness. Her publicist, Cheryl J. Kagan, confirmed the news, stating that she passed away peacefully in a Los Angeles hospital, surrounded by her family.

Anderson’s portrayal of Jennifer Marlowe—a glamorous, intelligent, and assertive receptionist at the fictional WKRP radio station—was groundbreaking. At a time when female characters on television were often portrayed in stereotypical roles, Anderson’s character broke away from the “dumb blonde” trope that was so common in the media. Jennifer was a smart, resourceful woman who used her charm and wit to navigate a male-dominated work environment. This nuanced performance not only made Anderson a fan favorite but also earned her critical acclaim, including two Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations during the original run of the series from 1978 to 1982.

Born on August 5, 1945, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Anderson’s early years were grounded in education. Before transitioning to acting, she worked as a schoolteacher. She eventually moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment, making her film debut in 1966. Over the next several years, she appeared in numerous television series, but it was her role on WKRP in Cincinnati that catapulted her to stardom. The show, which became a pop culture staple, not only showcased her acting talent but also placed Anderson in the spotlight as one of the era’s most well-known TV personalities.

Her acting career extended beyond WKRP in Cincinnati, with Anderson appearing in a variety of films and TV shows throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Although she became typecast to some degree due to her initial breakout role, Anderson skillfully navigated her career, taking on a range of roles that demonstrated her versatility. She appeared in numerous TV specials, guest-starred on popular shows, and even starred in a few TV movies, earning respect from both her peers and critics.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Anderson was known for her high-profile personal life. In 1988, she married the renowned actor Burt Reynolds, and the two became one of Hollywood’s most talked-about couples. They adopted a son, Quinton, before divorcing in 1994. In 2008, Anderson married musician Bob Flick, and the two remained together until her death. She is survived by her husband Bob Flick, her daughter Deidra Hoffman, her son Quinton Anderson Reynolds, and several grandchildren.

In addition to her acting career, Anderson was passionate about raising awareness for causes she cared about. In 1999, she became a spokesperson for the COPD Together organization, an initiative aimed at educating people about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Anderson’s advocacy work was deeply personal, as she had witnessed the effects of the disease firsthand in her own family, with both of her parents being heavy smokers. Anderson’s work in this area highlighted her compassion and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Throughout her career, Anderson’s impact on the entertainment industry was undeniable. She not only helped redefine female characters on television but also became a role model for young women aspiring to break through barriers in a predominantly male-dominated industry. Her influence extended beyond acting, and her dedication to important causes further cemented her legacy. Fans and colleagues alike have expressed their sorrow at her passing, praising her not just for her talent, but for her warmth and generosity of spirit.

A private family service is planned, with a public celebration of her life to be held at a later date. In the wake of her death, tributes from across the entertainment world have poured in, celebrating her lasting influence on television and her significant role in breaking down stereotypes about women in the media.

Loni Anderson will always be remembered for her unforgettable role as Jennifer Marlowe and for the positive impact she had on both her industry and the people whose lives she touched. Her legacy, both as an actress and an advocate, will endure, reminding us all of the power of representation and the importance of perseverance in pursuing one’s dreams.
