Sophie Hediger, a talented Olympic snowboarder from Switzerland, has tragically passed away at the age of 26 after being caught in an avalanche at the Arosa resort in Switzerland.
The Swiss-Ski Federation confirmed her death on December 24, 2024, and expressed their shock and deep sorrow over the loss. “We are stunned and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family, to whom we express our deepest condolences,” said Swiss-Ski Federation CEO Walter Reusser. “For the Swiss Ski family, the tragic death of Sophie Hediger has cast a dark shadow over the Christmas holidays. We are immeasurably sad. We will keep an honorable memory of Sophie.”
The Avalanche Incident
The tragic accident occurred on December 23, 2024, when Hediger was skiing with a companion on a closed slope in the Arosa area. The two were reportedly leaving the mountain when the avalanche struck. Hediger’s companion, whose identity has not been disclosed, was unharmed, but Hediger was buried under the snow. After a two-hour search, emergency responders were unable to revive her.
The region had recently experienced heavy snowfall, increasing avalanche risks, which contributed to the danger at the time of the accident.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Hediger’s death comes after a remarkable career in snowboarding. She competed in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, participating in both women’s snowboard cross and mixed team snowboard cross.
In the 2023-24 season, Hediger achieved her first two World Cup podium finishes, making history with her performance in St. Moritz, Switzerland, in January 2024. She also posted a personal achievement in Georgia, taking third place in a World Cup event in Guadari, showcasing her skill and determination on the slopes.
Her final Instagram post, shared on December 15, expressed her excitement about her riding and her best-ever qualification, giving her fans a glimpse of the bright future she had ahead.
