The 2026 MTV VMAs returned to Los Angeles with Madonna, Taylor Swift, Snoop Dogg, and major music stars commanding the ceremony.

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards brought major names from music and entertainment together in Los Angeles on Sunday, with Madonna, Taylor Swift and other leading performers dominating the ceremony at the Peacock Theater.

The event marked the return of the VMAs to Los Angeles for the first time since 2017 and featured rapper Snoop Dogg as host. The ceremony aired live on CBS and MTV and was also available through Paramount+.

Madonna was one of the night's central figures. The music icon returned to the VMA stage for her first performance at the ceremony in 23 years, opening the show with appearances by Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX. Her return added a major historical element to an awards ceremony known for high-profile performances.

Madonna also entered the ceremony with one of the largest nomination totals and ultimately became the night's leading award recipient, taking home seven trophies. Billboard reported that her wins included Artist of the Year, while her overall total made her one of the defining figures of the ceremony.

Taylor Swift also had a major night. She won Video of the Year, one of the most prominent awards presented during the ceremony. Her recognition added another major milestone to a career that has increasingly included both music and visual storytelling.

Swift also received the inaugural Artist Director Honors, a new recognition created to highlight artists whose work behind the camera has made a significant contribution to music-video storytelling. The honor reflected her work directing music videos and short-form visual projects throughout her career.

The ceremony featured a broad lineup of performers, including BLACKPINK's LISA, RAYE, Sienna Spiro, Shaboozey, Gunna, GENER8ION and Yung Lean. The combination of established stars and newer performers gave the broadcast a wide range of musical styles and audiences.

Nirvana also received the Video Vanguard Award, adding a significant piece of music history to the evening. The honor recognized the band's enduring influence on music video culture and its place in the history of alternative rock.

The event also served as a major Los Angeles entertainment gathering, bringing artists, actors, presenters and music-industry figures together at the Peacock Theater. Red-carpet arrivals included Taylor Swift, Adam Lambert, Charli XCX and other prominent entertainment figures.

Snoop Dogg's role as host gave the ceremony a distinctly Los Angeles identity. During the broadcast, he incorporated references to the city and its culture while guiding the event through its performances and award presentations.

The 2026 ceremony ultimately combined several generations of music culture. Madonna's return connected the event to its early history, while Swift's recognition for both performance and directing reflected the increasingly broad role artists play in creating visual entertainment.

With major awards, high-profile performances and a return to Los Angeles, the VMAs once again functioned as both a music awards ceremony and a large-scale pop-culture event. The September 27 broadcast placed established stars, emerging artists and music-video creators together on the same stage, making the ceremony one of the major entertainment events of the weekend.
