The music world has lost one of its most cherished talents. Lasse Wellander, the long-time guitarist for the legendary Swedish band ABBA, passed away on April 7, 2023, after a brief but intense battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.
A message shared on Wellander’s personal Facebook page confirmed the sad news. The statement revealed that Wellander had recently been diagnosed with spreading cancer and, sadly, succumbed to the illness on Good Friday, surrounded by family and loved ones. The message from his family expressed their deep grief, stating, “It is with indescribable sadness that we have to announce that our beloved Lasse has fallen asleep.”
The tribute went on to describe Wellander as not only an exceptional musician but also a wonderful family man. “You were an amazing musician and humble as few, but above all you were a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather,” the statement continued. “Kind, safe, caring and loving… and so much more that cannot be described in words. A hub in our lives, and it’s unbelievable that we now have to live on without you. We love and miss you so much.”
ABBA, the iconic pop group that Wellander had worked with for decades, also honored his memory. The band posted a heartfelt tribute on their Instagram, acknowledging the vital role he played both in the studio and on stage. “Lasse was a dear friend, a fun guy, and a superb guitarist,” the band wrote. “The importance of his creative input in the recording studio as well as his rock-solid guitar work on stage was immense.” They described his contributions as an integral part of the ABBA story, noting that he would be “deeply missed and never forgotten.”
Wellander first began collaborating with ABBA in the 1970s and toured with them for several years. His impeccable guitar skills were featured on many of ABBA’s classic hits, and he was also part of the band’s 2021 reunion album, Voyage, which was nominated for two Grammy Awards.
As ABBA concluded their tribute, they reflected on the deep loss of a true friend and talented musician, writing, “We mourn his tragic and premature death, and remember the kind words, the sense of humor, the smiling face, and the musical brilliance of the man who played such an integral role in the ABBA story.”
Lasse Wellander’s legacy as one of the most respected and beloved musicians in the world of pop music will never fade. His contributions to ABBA’s sound and his unforgettable presence on stage have left an indelible mark on music history.
