Cher Opens Up About Her Weight and Emotions in Candid Memoir
In her newly released memoir Cher: The Memoir – Part One, the iconic 78-year-old singer offers a deeply personal look at her life, including the details of her weight fluctuations and how they were often tied to her emotions. Cher recalls a moment from her 1975 CBS show Cher where she shared with the audience how her weight fluctuated based on her mood.
“I am twenty-eight years old, five feet seven and a half inches tall, have black hair and brown eyes, weigh a hundred and four pounds when I’m happy, and a hundred and eight when I’m miserable,” Cher wrote. She revealed that in that moment, her weight was at 106 pounds, and she humorously added, “My fate is in your hands.”
Cher’s Journey Through Personal Struggles
This candid revelation came nearly a year after The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour ended in 1974 following her tumultuous split from Sonny Bono. Reflecting on the emotional toll of the breakup, Cher explains how her personal life often differed from the public’s perception. “Those who blamed me didn’t really know what it was like to be in my situation or how hard it had been,” she said, detailing how tensions in her marriage with Bono led to struggles with eating and sleeping.
At one point in the memoir, Cher describes how her weight dropped dramatically due to stress. “I was finding it hard to eat and to sleep… Weight was falling off me,” she recalls. Despite this, she later found comfort in food, remembering a birthday celebration with her best friend, Paulette Howell, where she couldn’t even eat her favorite dish, chicken cordon bleu, because of the emotional strain she was under.
The Weight of Fame and the Impact of Public Life
Cher also discusses her early career, revealing that at the age of 25 and weighing 180 pounds, she was a size six. She notes that her body type eventually gained popularity, especially as she started doing more dance routines for TV productions. Despite the challenges she faced with her weight, Cher’s experiences offer a unique insight into the pressures of public life, fame, and the emotional toll it takes on someone trying to balance personal struggles and career success.
Cher’s memoir not only reflects on her physical transformation but also serves as an introspective journey through the highs and lows of her life and career.
